ALDImobile vs Woolworths Everyday Mobile vs Coles Mobile

Australian supermarkets love touting low prices on groceries, but how do their mobile plans stack up?

Key takeaways

  • ALDImobile has the best value for data, including unlimited data banking. It runs on the Telstra wholesale network and is the only option with shared family plans.
  • Everyday Mobile has the best discounts, with up to $50 off Woolworths groceries per month. It also runs on Telstra's wholesale network.
  • Coles Mobile runs on the Optus network. Its plans are 4G-only and expire after 28 days.

Australia's big three supermarkets - ALDI, Woolworths and Coles - all sell competing mobile plans under their own branding.

While the prices are similar, there's plenty of variation when it comes to data, bonus features and discounts.

Here's a quick snapshot of what each brand offers.

ALDImobile vs Everyday Mobile vs Coles Mobile: Price and data

  • ALDImobile has higher data inclusions and unlimited data banking
  • Woolworths Everyday Rewards members get 10% off
  • Coles prepaid plans expire after 28 days

Pricing and data are the two main factors you need to consider when choosing a plan. In short, is the average cost per gigabyte worth the asking price?

As a general rule of thumb, you want to be paying less than $1 per GB a month.

Here's how each supermarket plan stacks up.

ALDI

ALDImobile has a wide range of 30-day prepaid plans to suit various budgets. Prices start from $19 and go up to $59 per month.

The data costs are impressive, especially on the larger plans. For example, ALDImobile's $59 plan comes with 175GB, which works out to $0.34 per GB. That's substantially better than anything Coles or Woolworths offer.

In addition to its prepaid plans, ALDI sells a pay-as-you-go (PAYG) plan, 365-day data-only plans and a range of family mobile plans which allow you to connect up to 6 family members on a shared plan.

Woolworths

Everyday Mobile offers a choice of three prepaid 30-day plans starting at $25 per month.

In terms of data, its best-value plan works out to $0.87 per GB.

Alternatively, you can opt for one of Woolworths' 5G SIM-only plans, starting at $40 a month. While they do cost a bit more, these plans do provide better value when it comes to data (as little as $0.40 per GB.)

Everyday Rewards members can get 10% off 5G SIM-only plans when they add their Rewards card during checkout. This saves you up to $6 per month on your phone bill.

Everyday Mobile also offers prepaid long expiry plans starting at $120 for 6 months. While slightly cheaper on a per-month basis, you will need to pay the whole amount in one go.

Woolworths long expiry plans don't offer great value when it comes to data. Depending on the plan, you're looking at a cost-per-GB of up to $1.60.

Coles Mobile

Coles Mobile offers 2 month-to-month plans: $35 for 45GB and $45 for 70GB. Both stack up favourably against our $1 per GB benchmark, at $0.78 and $0.64, respectively.

Coles also offers 2 prepaid plans with 28-day expiries that are on par with what other providers offer in terms of price and data allowance.

The main caveat is that you'll end up paying 13 bills over the year instead of 12 due to the 28-day expiry period.

As with Woolworths, you can elect to sign up to a 365-day long expiry plan: $195 for 140GB or $240 for 210GB. With a cost-per-GB of $1.00 and $1.39 respectively, these plans aren't the best in terms of value.

Winner - ALDImobile

Overall, ALDImobile has the lowest cost-per-GB prices. It is also the only option with unlimited data banking.

With that said, if you just want a budget plan under $30, all three supermarkets provide similar value.

ALDImobile vs Everyday Mobile vs Coles Mobile: Network coverage

  • ALDImobile and Everyday Mobile use the Telstra wholesale network
  • AldiMobile has the best access to 5G
  • Coles runs on Optus and does not currently offer 5G plans

ALDImobile and Everyday Mobile are on par with each other when it comes to network coverage. Coles Mobile sits a little behind the pack, especially if you own a 5G-enabled phone.

Aldi & Woolworths

ALDImobile and Everyday Mobile both use Telstra's wholesale network, which reaches 98.8% of the Australian population. That's slightly lower than the full Telstra 4G network, which purportedly services 99.7% of the population.

People in some rural or regional areas may feel the difference between Telstra's wholesale and full networks. But for most users, the difference is barely noticeable.

ALDImobile customers with 5G phones get access to Telstra's faster 5G network in supported areas on selected plans (over $25.)

Everyday Mobile also offers access to Telstra 5G, but you need the top-tier plan to access it.

Coles

Coles Mobile runs on the Optus 4G network, which reaches 98.5% of the Australian population.

Coles Mobile does not currently offer 5G on its plans. If you own a 5G-compatible smartphone this means you won't be able to access the faster speeds.

Winner - ALDImobile

ALDImobile and Everyday Mobile have identical network coverage. However, ALDI offers 5G access at a lower price.

"Coles and Woolies offers are pretty neck and neck so it largely comes down to where you shop. Woolworths has a slightly longer expiry on prepaid plans and the advantage of Telstra's network coverage, but largely they're very much same-same. I shop at Woolies since it's my local and that made the decision for me. I like both the Woolworths Rewards app and the Everyday Mobile app on Android too, which is a nice feature."

ALDImobile vs Everyday Mobile vs Coles Mobile: International calls

If you have friends or relatives living overseas, free international calls are non-negotiable.

These are the destinations available from each supermarket with unlimited calls and text:

AldiMobile: Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Israel, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Norway, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, UK, USA.

(Note: AldiMobile's entry-level plan does not include free international calls or SMS.)

Everyday Mobile (prepaid): Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, China, Denmark, Greece, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Mexico, Ireland, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, Israel, South Korea, Spain, Norway, Thailand, United Kingdom, USA.

Everyday Mobile (SIM only): Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Columbia, Costa Rica, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, India, Ireland, Israel, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Mongolia, New Zealand, Norway, Peru, Romania, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Thailand, United Kingdom, USA, Venezuela.

Coles Mobile (prepaid): Canada, Mainland China, France, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, United Kingdom, United States

Coles Mobile (month-to-month): Bangladesh, Canada, Mainland China, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Thailand, United Kingdom, United States, Vietnam.

AldiMobile also provides 200 minutes per month to the following destinations: Andorra, Bangladesh, Belgium, Bulgaria, Chile, Cyprus, Denmark, French Guiana, Greece, Guam, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Pakistan, Puerto Rico, Peru, Romania, Slovakia, South Africa, Spain and Sweden.

Winner - AldiMobile

AldiMobile wins on the numbers, with free calls to 44 destinations in total. However, it obviously comes down to which countries you actually plan to call. (i.e. - If you don't know anyone in Malta, its inclusion will likely be irrelevant.)

ALDImobile vs Everyday Mobile vs Coles Mobile: International roaming

If you have an overseas trip planned anytime soon, you're going to want a mobile plan with international roaming.

Woolworths, Coles and Aldi take slightly different approaches when it comes to international roaming.

Here's how each supermarket breaks down its pricing.

ALDImobile

Coles Mobile

Winner - Everyday Mobile

Woolworths provides the best clarity when it comes to international roaming - simply choose the pack that matches your destination and top up as needed. By contrast, ALDImobile and Coles use a pay-as-you-go (PAYG) method which can quickly add up if you're not careful.

ALDImobile vs Everyday Mobile vs Coles Mobile: Perks and discounts

  • ALDImobile has higher data inclusions and unlimited data banking
  • Woolworths Everyday Rewards members get 10% off
  • Coles prepaid plans expire after 28 days

If you're tossing up between 2 similar plans, be sure to check for deals and extra incentives.

From grocery discounts to unlimited data rollover, here are the key perks offered by each brand.

ALDI

  • Unlimited data rollover: This is a handy feature to have if you don't want your unused data to go to waste. There's also no cap as to how much data you can bank for future use. ALDI is one of the few mobile providers with unlimited rollover.
  • Wi-Fi calling and VoLTE: Wi-FI calling allows you to make calls using your home internet connection. VoLTE allows compatible handsets to make calls over the 4G network. ALDImobile supports both of these features.

Woolworths

  • Discount on groceries: Everyday Rewards members can claim 10% off (up to $50) each month when they shop in-store.
  • Data rollover: Everyday Mobile allows data banking up to 500GB on its month-to-month plans and prepaid plans.
  • Data sharing: You have the option to gift up to 50% of your data allowance per recharge or usage period. However, a few exclusions apply. For example, you can't gift data from bonus data offers or data add-ons that have been purchased and data that has been already gifted to you.
  • Wi-Fi calling and VoLTE: Everyday Mobile supports both of these features.
  • eSIM: Instead of a physical SIM card, Everyday Mobile allows you to sign up almost instantly with an eSIM as long as you have a compatible smartphone.

Coles

  • Introductory discount: Coles Mobile regularly offers discounts to new customers when they activate a plan. This can save you up to $25 during your first month.
  • Data rollover: Coles Mobile allows data banking up to 500GB on its month-to-month plans and prepaid plans.
  • Wi-Fi calling and VoLTE: Coles Mobile supports both of these features.

Winner - Everyday Mobile

The ability to shave up to $50 off your monthly grocery bill makes Everyday Mobile the clear winner (but only if you regularly shop at Woolworths.)

For big data users, ALDImobile is a better choice thanks to its unlimited data rollover perk.

ALDImobile vs Everyday Mobile vs Coles Mobile: Which is better?

There's no one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to mobile plans. It depends on your budget, how much data you need and which extras appeal most to you.

Having said that, Everyday Mobile is the clear winner if you do your groceries at Woolworths. Depending on how much you shop, the 10% grocery discount can cover the entire cost of your plan.

ALDImobile stands out for families that want to bundle their services. It also wins on data, with better bang-for-buck and unlimited data banking.

Coles Mobile is an okay option if you don't like Telstra and are happy with Optus 4G. However, its features aren't as strong as Woolworths or Aldi.

Our personal recommendation: Go with ALDImobile.
