amaysim data plans review

amaysim launched in 2010 and is now one of the largest mobile virtual network operators in Australia. In addition to its popular mobile plans, it provides a range of mobile broadband plans on the Optus 4G Plus network, as well as NBN plans with download speeds of up to 240Mbps.

amaysim's plans provide simple, uncomplicated value, especially as you get towards the more expensive end of its offerings.

For those who need a bit more data on the go or a replacement for their fixed line connection, amaysim is a highly competitive option with no lock-in contract.

However, if you're keen to stick to a budget, there are cheaper broadband plans available from other budget providers.

Pros

  • 5G access at up to 150Mbps
  • Good per dollar value on premium plans
  • Unlimited data rollover
  • No lock-in contract across all plans and the option to sign up via eSIM if you have a compatible handset

Cons

  • 28-day expiry on mobile data
  • Lower-end plans are slightly more expensive than average
  • NBN plans are BYO modem only

In 2024, amaysim launched a new range of contract-free NBN plans to sit alongside its mobile broadband offerings.

There are four options to choose from with download speeds ranging from 25Mbps to 240Mbps. (NBN 12 and NBN 1000 plans are not currently offered.)

amaysim's NBN prices are a bit all over the shop. For example, the average NBN 50 plan costs $82 per month according to Finder research, whereas amaysim charges $85.

However, its prices are a lot more competitive at the higher end, with the Superfast As (NBN 250) plan being a standout. At $100 a month, it's $12 cheaper than what you would typically pay for these speeds. This works out to a significant saving of $144 per year.

Currently, you can get the NBN 50 and NBN 250 plans for $20 off for the first 6 months, exclusively through Finder. Here are the links to buy.

Overall, we think amaysim's pricing is solid. However, it's worth noting that you will need to provide your own modem which could be an added complication for some.

With amaysim, you can pick from three different mobile data plans on the Optus 4G network. All plans are available month to month, but only have a 28-day expiry period. Here are your options:

  • 7GB for $25
  • 50GB for $50
  • 90GB for $365

You will need your own SIM-enabled device in order to access your mobile broadband data. If you go over your limit, you'll be charged for extra data at a rate of $10 for every additional 1GB.

At the bottom end of the data spectrum, amaysim doesn't stand out much, with their 7GB plan costing around $2.15 per 1GB.

But at the higher end it has some of the best data for dollar value you'll find in the mobile broadband market, offering 1GB at a rate of just 65c.

Beyond that, amaysim's plans expire after just 28 days, which means you'll find yourself recharging an extra time over the course of a year compared to 30-day plans.

Bonus features

Broadband is a competitive space so amaysim has thrown in a bunch of incentives to tempt customers into signing up.

1. Unlimited data banking

Unused data automatically rolls over into your data bank at the end of each billing cycle. Unlike some providers, there is no limit to how much unused data you can store. The only catch is that you need to keep recharging your plan before it expires.

2. No lock-in contract

amaysim's NBN and mobile broadband plans are all pay-as-you-go. There are no lock-in contracts which means you can cancel at any time.

3. Free 5G access

amaysim's 50GB and 90GB plans come with free access to Optus' 5G network in addition to 4G. Depending on the plan and your location, this can result in download speeds of up to 150Mbps.

      Hi Linda,

      Thank you for your inquiry.

Generally, Once you’ve applied for your new NBN plan, your ISP will usually arrange for a technician to visit your home to complete the installation. You will also receive a new modem if you have opted for one and instructions on how to connect your devices to the network.
The activation process after applying for a plan will depend on whether you’ve already had the NBN equipment installed at your premises and your internet provider. If your premises has the NBN equipment installed already you could be connected within 48-72 hours. If your property has yet to have the NBN equipment installed you can expect to wait up to 3-4 weeks for a technician to complete the installation. It would be nice also i you can clarify this directly with your provider.

I hope this information has helped.

      Cheers,
      Harold

      Hi Natasha,

You’ve come through to finder.com.au, not amaysim. Amaysim is a mobile broadband provider that operates on the Optus 4G network. So long as you have access to Optus 4G, you will be eligible for amaysim’s plans.

      Thanks,
      Brodie
